The Mobile BI (aka "MoBI") application from Business Objects Labs lets users access BusinessObjects Web Intelligence documents directly from a mobile device. MoBI provides folder support, report-to-report linking, chart drill down, and take action support (make phone call, send SMS, etc.). All these features are exposed to end users through standard Web Intelligence reports published in standard web services on a stock BusinessObjects XI R2 server. The BI-specific content accessibility features in MoBI enable a broad range of solutions to be built as shown in the sample Web Intelligence reports below.

Business Objects MoBI

Technical Description

Lightweight mobile devices accompany users in their everyday business and private lives and enable immediate access to information from virtually anywhere. The trade-off for this ubiquity is that mobile devices have limited memory, variable network bandwidth, small screen size, and limited input capabilities due to the absence of a real keyboard and mouse. For professionals on the move, an enterprise mobile business intelligence application needs to fit into these constraints in the way that it combines enterprise data access, mobile communications, and software ease of use.

MoBI addresses these device constraints and usability requirements with native user interface capabilities and industry standard web services content access that lets any mobile network become an extension of your business intelligence network.

A MoBI solution includes two components:

  1. A J2ME Java client application (called “MoBI”) running on a mobile device with which business users access, view and interact with Web Intelligence documents managed by BusinessObjects XI R2. MoBI has been tested on Nokia, Motorola, and Blackberry devices but it should be able to run on any J2ME enables device (MIDP version 2.0 and CLDC version 1.1).
  2. A standard BusinessObjects XI R2 BI server with deployed Web Services and some additional report content design practices targeted at simplifying the mobile BI end user experience.

Business Objects MoBI features

The MoBI application accesses BusinessObjects Web Intelligence documents from your mobile device. Although MoBI will display any Web Intelligence document, the user experience is best when documents are written specifically for easy reading and navigation on a small screen. Guidelines for developing MoBI centric documents are provided in Section 2 of the MoBI documentation.  We hope you enjoy this and as always, tell us what you think.  Please send your enhancement feedback and comments to feedback.labs@businessobjects.com.
