Data Feed as a Universe allows business intelligence (BI) users to combine external data with data warehouse and other internal BI information in a managed way by retrieving and exposing this data to business users through semantic layer universes in Business Objects XI R2. Examples of ‘external data’ include RSS feeds, Web service feeds (including Query as a web service) and CSV and Excel files. These external data feeds are treated as managed resources just like any other data source in Business Objects XI R2.
Data Feed as a Universe brings the power of Web 2.0 style data ‘mashups’ to the ordinary business intelligence user by allowing BI content to be easily combined with virtually any data source available on the web or on a computer.
External data feeds from Web Services, RSS, and Excel or CSV files can add tremendous value to BI applications by increasing the contextual information available to a business user for making business decisions. Examples include combining farm lot crop yields with local temperature data feeds, combining company revenues by geography with US government demographic data feeds, aggregating and analyzing industry news, and integrating ERP manufacturing information with hand created sales forecasts in Excel spreadsheets. DFaaUNV natively supports Query as a Web Service data feeds which allows customers and partners to quickly share and integrate their internal BI data across enterprise boundaries. In all these cases, managing user access through Business Objects XI R2 increases the reliability, security, and audit-ability of the resulting BI solution. DFaaUNV has been tested against many but not all possible data feeds and user mileage may vary. Below is an example of an RSS news data feed.
Below you can see an example of a simple business intelligence analysis performed in Web Intelligence on top of a RSS news data feed.
Enjoy! We hope you use this prototype to discover the many ways web services data can change the way people consume information. Please give us feedback to make sure we know how you're using this and what else you would like to see it do in the future. And remember, this is a prototype only and NOT for use in production environments.
