The Academic Research Center in Vancouver is initiating research partnerships that will bring together faculty and graduate students in universities with R&D teams within SAP Business Objects. Funding for each project will typically be in the form of one or more ARC Fellowships for master's or doctoral students whose thesis research is related to the projects.
Project funding for the Summer 2008 competition will be selected from proposals submitted in response to a list of proposed topics. The Vancouver Development Center will be the technical lead within Business Objects for these projects. Students who hold fellowships will work closely with engineering teams in Vancouver.
ARC fellowships are awarded to master's and doctoral students engaged in thesis research on topics of interest to SAP Business Objects.

Faculty supervisors for one or more doctoral ARC fellowships are eligible for an annual stipend of $10,000 CDN.
Within Canada, ARC Fellowships qualify for provincial and federal matching programs, such as the NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships, including NSERC-MITACS Scholarships. Successful applicants are encouraged to pursue these opportunities to further leverage ARC funding.
The following research topics have been identified for project proposals from faculty researchers who are interested in supervising master's or doctoral theses. Additional information about each topic is provided in the linked documents.
Proposals should include an anticipated starting date (July 1, 2008, or later), a duration (up to two years for master's and three for doctoral), the name and research qualifications for the faculty supervisor (a full or abbreviated CV may be submitted) and for the student (if identified), and a brief (maximum two pages) research plan that responds to the needs set out in the suggested topics.
Proposals need not address all aspects of a topic, but should clearly identify the benefits to Business Objects of the proposed research and the benefits to the student's thesis.
Proposals should be submitted by June 1, 2008, to be considered for the Summer 2008 round of funding. Proposals received after that date may be considered, or may be held until a subsequent round of funding.
Funding will be awarded beginning July 1, 2008, for successful proposals. The standard terms for ARC fellowships will apply to IP rights and reporting requirements.
Proposals should be submitted as PDF attachments sent by email to arc@businessobjects.com. Up to three documents should be attached: the proposal (described above), the faculty supervisor's CV, and the student's CV (if a student has been identified in the proposal). Proposals do not require that a student be identified, but this will be beneficial and may increase the chances of success.
Questions regarding ARC Fellowships or the submission of proposals may be addressed to Dr. Kellogg Booth or Dr. Jacob Slonim.
There is a standard agreement that governs ARC Fellowships.
